As I walked down the stairs to the Under St. Marks Theatre, giddy bubbles filled my tummy. Another year of Fringe has arrived, and my excitement for all of the participating artists radiated through my skin. I was excited to kick off the festival with Midlife Catharsis, as my longing to relocate to another country continued to ride through my veins.
Killy Dwyer’s one-woman musical show is an amplified personification of her inner self. She let her out on stage, complete with a synth pad for intricate original songs, a surf board placed in the middle of the stage, and a projection screen which plays videos of her wipe-outs while learning how to surf.
Her wipe-outs of life, didn’t stop her. She kept on paddling, and made it to paradise. But is paradise really the way out of yourself? Out of your own deeply personal characteristics that you may need to fix? Will moving away really cure all of your problems?
Killy Dwyer reflects on her life’s journey, filled with dropping out and leaving not one but 2 schools with one year left, easily distracted days, avoidance of herself with a persona she put on for years. She gave us an answer: no. You follow you wherever you go. Even when the waves are smooth. Even when the sun is shining. Even when you’re in paradise.
The show was structured to reflect herself: a little choppy, against the straight and narrow, and brave. There were confusing moments, but once Killy starts bringing the pieces together, you’ll see it all makes sense in Killy Dwyer fashion. It was certainly an enjoyable hour to start off the night.
