It does not surprise me that the HERE Arts team was attracted to Kat Mustatea’s creation The Mutables. I’ve had the good fortune to see absolutely amazing works here from Bill’s 44th to Rhynoceron to [Untitled Miniature] to Anywhere, so I’m always excited to see what they have in the works. The work this team brings to NYC is absolutely spellbinding. The Mutables is no exception.
There was palpable excitement on opening night, and it was deserved. As performers took their places, I instantly thought they had arrived from Krypton. Camelia Skikos’ costumes set the tone. Not only did the performers look other worldly, but they also brought with them superior technology we always credit with coming from across the galaxy. Their theremin like voices coming from the movement of devices on wrists and ankles was both melodic, soothing and otherworldly. Their movement precise and expressive, the work of Marie Lloyd Paspe was gripping - her body contorting to the elements at play. I would be remiss if I did not note the enchanting voice of Rocky Duval.
What was The Mutables about? I’m not 100% sure. I didn’t need to know to be entranced. Perhaps it could simply be seen as the vulnerable vs. the powerful; the voiceless vs. authoritative. What is certain is that these artists are at their top of their game. Their collaboration is truly a work of art.
Composed by Kamala Sankaram with Associate Choreography by Marie Lloyd Paspe
