Upon entering the theatre this evening, I was a bit perplexed by the white curtain that stretched across the stage. Wrinkled and dirty, it in no way inspired the awe that I experienced earlier in the Puppetopia 2026 festival. Honestly, there’s nothing I hate more than a wrinkled curtain. But, you can’t judge a book by its cover, and I’m so glad I didn’t!
The Magnificent Ms. Pham is a fantastic retelling of the true story of boatperson Kim Pham and
her unwitting journey to becoming American. Moving fluidly between lived experience, memory, literature, and myth, this work reframes her exodus from Saigon to Houston as a Country Western Musical. Yes, that right - a Country/Western musical with puppets.
And the phrase “moving fluidly” should not be taken lightly!
While the story begins with shadow puppets projected on screen telling us of a mythical protectress, it quickly morphs to a water world where we meet Kim, our protagonist. With witty lyrics and sharp harmonies, the story does not always face calm seas. The movement and the action can be chaotic – but so is Kim’s life story.
From lychee trees to comfy couches, a unique beauty emerges from the dreamscape that floats guided by a multitude of hands in The Magnificent Mrs. Pham. Pink houses dot the landscape. A gigantic, protective mother goddess keeps a watchful eye and a helping hand at the ready. A husband and several children round out Kim’s story.
There is something magical in the creativity found at Puppetopia 2026 - something truly special. Each company has developed incredibly complex performances. From concept to the stage, no detail is over looked. Opening Night for The Magnificent Mrs. Pham was just extraordinary, Technique and innovation meld together to create work that is intriguing, fascinating and emotionally raw. The performances remind us that puppets are for more than worn out socks and children’s parables. It is an artform that’s vital and well worth experiencing in the flesh. The Magnificent Mrs. Pham only runs through the weekend - make sure not to miss out.
